Everyone Deserves a Chorus of Support

Every season we pick a non-profit partner, and most seasons the connection is straightforward: we sing Neil Young, we support a farm. In the fall of 2023 it was something closer to the bone.

We were singing Brandi Carlile — a Grammy-winning songwriter, a noted philanthropist, and an activist for humanitarian aid, racial justice and LGBTQ+ rights. Her songs are about family, community and belonging, which are more or less the three things this chorus exists to be about. So we partnered with OUT MetroWest, which helps build communities where LGBTQ+ youth can be themselves and thrive.

Here is what we wrote to our audience that November, and it still says it best:

At Newton Family Singers, we deeply believe in the power of music to unite and heal, truly embodying our mission to create community through music. And we see a beautiful symmetry in supporting OUT MetroWest, as both organizations value inclusivity, diversity, and compassionate connection. All proceeds from this show will go to support this important organization — because everyone deserves a chorus of support in their lives.

The list of organizations we've sung for over the years is long now: AANE and the Autism Alliance of MetroWest, Best Buddies, the Island Health & Wellness Center after the hurricanes, the Newton Food Pantry, the Newton Community Farm, the Calculus Project, Mothers' Milk Bank Northeast, USA for UNHCR, The Second Step, Family Promise Metrowest, Urbanity Dance, and the ten local charities we honored at our tenth anniversary.

It isn't explicitly part of our mission. We've just found it rewarding to raise funds for nonprofits that have touched members of our community. When ticket sales benefit a cause that matters to someone in the room, it turns out to be very easy to ask people for their support.
