The Music of Johnny Cash and the Carter Family

Newton South High School140 Brandeis Road, Newton Centre, MA

When Johnny Cash wed June Carter, the Man in Black married into the First Family of Country Music. The Carter Family defined country music with their plain-spoken lyrics and Maybelle Carter’s distinctive guitar picking style. The Carters were the first country music stars... and Johnny Cash was the biggest, with records like “I Walk the Line” and “Ring of Fire.”

Sing along to those Cash hits, as well as Carter family favorites “Keep on the Sunny Side” and “Can the Circle Be Unbroken.” The program also includes “Get Rhythm,” “Wabash Cannonball,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Wildwood Flower,” “Jackson,” “Fifty Miles of Elbow Room” and “Daddy Sang Bass.” We sing “Can the Circle Be Unbroken” in memory of Keri O’Brien.

Cowboy boots encouraged. As the song says, singin’ seems to help a troubled soul.
